The case for sustainable ship recycling

Maritime London and Lloyd’s Register (LR) have partnered for the second time this year to organise a webinar, which was also supported by the British Embassy in Athens.

’The case for sustainable ship recycling’, hosted by LR and moderated by Maritime London Chief Executive Jos Standerwick, assessed the economic case for sustainable ship recycling and the lifecycle considerations facing shipowners.

The hour-long live discussion addressed some of the key questions affecting the sector, from ship recycling policies, practices and compliance to the need for sharing of information and transparency to help the sector drive to sustainability.

Singapore-based Jamie Dalzell, Senior Trader of the world’s largest cash buyer GMS set the scene looking at the state of the ship recycling sector, with James Turner, QC of Quadrant Chambers providing a legal perspective. LR’s ship recycling experts Jen Riley-James and Ehud Bar-Lev talked about the regulatory aspects and shared details of their own experiences of ship breaking yards, in Asia and Turkey in particular, with Martin Crawford-Brunt, CEO of vetting agency RightShip contributing to the discussion from the charterers’ viewpoint.
